Common use cases
Inspect escaped text in logs or configuration.
Convert a known Unicode escape to a readable character.
Edge cases
This is not a complete JSON or JavaScript string serializer. Quotes, backslashes and line breaks remain unchanged in default mode; use a JSON string escape tool when needed.
Malformed sequences such as \uZZZZ and unrelated escapes like \n are left as written. A recognized braced value above U+10FFFF produces an error.
Decode processes one pass. Isolated UTF-16 surrogates are not validated as complete characters; check the output before reusing it.
